English Language Learners (ELL)
Who are ELL students?
English language learners are students whose primary, native language is a language other than English.
Activity #3
According to BBC Future in 2016, 60-75% of the world population can speak at least two languages.
People are increasingly expected to speak, read and write at least one of a handful of “super” languages, such as English, Chinese, Hindi, Spanish or Arabic, as well.

Take the poll and see how many people in this ETEC 522 course alone can speak more than one language!
Why are there so many people learning a second language?
It's never too old to learn a new language! There are so many benefits, and so many new ways you can learn them. Watch this 4 minute video on Steve Kaufmann talking about learning new languages on his iPhone. Steve is a Swedish-born Canadian polyglot, who has an understanding of 20 languages by 2020.
Activity #4
Now share with us about your experiences in language learning. If you are not learning a language, you can share with us about an experience of a friend, or what you think you would do if you were to start learning a new language.
